Open Farm Day At Shaker Village

July 28 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free
Poland Provisions and Attwood Farm & Kitchen are not participating in Open Farm Day, but more than 150 farms throughout the State of Maine join in this one-day celebration of agriculture and farming. Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is among the oldest farms in Maine still operated under the same management, since 1783. See Scottish highland cattle, a flock of more than 60 sheep, bees, barn cats, apple orchards, herb gardens, and vegetable gardens.
Featured activities of the day include guided tours of the 1830 barns — now under an active historic preservation project with the National Park Service Save America’s Treasures grant: speak with Brother Arnold as he guides you through this historic and literally groundbreaking work!
There will be tractor-drawn wagon rides, honey bee display and hives, tours of the Shakers’ historic herb gardens, and traditional craft demonstrations including: Tintype photography by Cole Caswell, woodcarving by Chuck Perry, blacksmithing demonstration by Maple Iron Forge, yarn spinning by Emily Siege, Zay’s Knives, honey, woven towels, and meet & greet with GOATS by In-Between Farm, Wabanaki jewelry by Melaina Maloney, hand-stitched Rwandan bowls by Ange Muhorakeye, book signing by Don Perkins of “Barns of Maine,” fresh baked bread by Barb Ames, wood stenciled paintings by Michele Sturgis, perennials and garden decor from Donna’s Greenhouse, Farm Stand by Chipman Farm, activities with Girl Scouts of Maine, & much more.
Maplewood Barbecue will be bringing their smoker and selling lunch plates while supplies last and sweet concessions like cotton candy, whoopie pies, and fresh popcorn will be for sale. Live bluegrass music by Bruce Hobart, lawn games, and free face painting for kids of all ages.
Shaker Store and Shaker Museum Visitors’ Center are open for shopping and free entry to our special exhibit. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see parts of Shaker Village that are not regularly open to the public! Bring your cameras and your whole family!
